‘Sukiyaki Western Django’ is a film directed by Takashi Miike, a remake of the spaghetti western of Sergio Corbucci called ‘Django’, which was itself a remake after Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Yojimbo’.
In this version we can see something of the history of the Genpei Wars between the Minamoto and Taira families, which fought in Japan. Hundreds of years after the Dannoura battle, the two families are in a small mountain village, searching for a buried treasure.
While the two violent clans are fighting to find the treasure first, the few inhabitants of the village decide to leave it fearfully, and as they go, a solitary and agile gunman shows up; another reason for competition between the two clans, as they both want him on their side.
It could be considered a good film, if you ignore the Anglo-Japanese accent of the actors; it is however, a movie about Asian cowboys, let’s not forget. The best assets of this film are the very good quality of the image, the good actors, the excellent settings and an inspired use of colours. Enjoy!
