Frances Mayes is a 35 year old writer, living in San Francisco and leading a perfect life.
Perfect, until the moment her husband tells her he wants a divorce. She is about to enter a difficult period in her life and she falls into a state of depression, as she cannot get over the divorce.
Her best friend Patti is there for her all along and as she sees that she is feeling worse every day, she convinces Frances to move to Tuscany.
In Italy, she buys a villa and starts a new life; she soon starts feeling better and likes her life amongst Italians.
At some point, she meets Marcelo, an antique dealer from Portobello, and she falls so crazily in love that she is even thinking about remarrying.
