Meg has recently divorced her husband, a pharmaceutical industry magnate, and she is now forced to move away to a new house, along with her daughter.

Given a choice, they decide to live in New York, in a luxurious house which happens to have a “panic room:, a hidden place that can totally isolate you from the rest of the building.

The room becomes a very good hiding place when the house is broken into by three thieves. Meg and Sarah manage to lock themselves inside the room before the thieves catch them, but Sarah is diabetic and her medicine is outside.

Moreover, the phone in the panic room has not been connected yet and the irony of it all is that what the thieves are looking for can be found in that room.
