In 1995, Detroit was one of the most dangerous cities in America; a city of crime, a fallen empire whose nicest neighborhoods have fallen in decay.
The people who made the city so great fled and left behind just a bunch of broken promises; the much promised industrial power was then the starting point of economical and racial problems.
The 8 Mile Road street, which goes around the perimeter of the city, now marks the frontier between the urban and the suburban, between black and white.
Detroit has a long tradition of creativity under pressure, and the music of this town has always expressed the truth about the facts of life there.
The film tells the story of Jimmy Smith, a young man from Detroit, also known as B-Rabbit. We can see how Jimmy got to be famous, where he started off, how he had to face strong opposition from several groups living in other neighborhoods than his own.
Despite all that, he did it; a white boy managed to improvise rap lyrics on a scene in front of a real audience, and there couldn’t have been a better choice than Eminem to achieve it.
