Cadillac Records

Cadillac Records puts on film the periods of glory and decay of Chess Records Music Studios, which have launched legends of blues and rock’n roll such as Muddy Waters, Little Water, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James or Chuck Berry.

The story of how blues music became so popular and then gave birth to rock’n roll starts in 1947, in a bar in Chicago, owned by a Polish immigrant called Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody). To entertain his customers he hired a talented but undisciplined band, formed by the calm and cerebral guitar player Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright) and the impulsive harmonica player Little Walter (Columbus Short).

After Muddy Walters got his first record out, Little Walter went solo as well; but his bad temper often got him into trouble, and the only person he could talk to was Muddy’s girlfriend Geneva Wade (Gabrielle Union).

Only in 1955 did a black man from St. Louis, one of Chess’ friends, manage to become famous in a world of white singers. Unfortunately Chuck Berry (Mos Def), the founder of rock’n roll music, was arrested and imprisoned at the peak of his career.

The one who took over his place in the Chess Studio star gallery was Etta James (Beyonce Knowles), a young woman with severe emotional problems, whose vulnerability tested Leonard’s patience in the most unexpected moments and ways.
