“I am David” is a movie based on the Anne Holms’s novel “North to Freedom”. David is a 12-year-old boy who has grown up as a prisoner in a 1950s Bulgarian camp, knowing almost nothing about the outer world or his family.
Johannes, his friend from the camp, is the one who taught the young boy everything he knows about life.
One night, David escapes the camp only with a compass, some bread and a sealed letter he had to bring it to Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, the only place where he would be safe.
Thanks to his intelligence and courage, he manages to cross the Greek border and take a cargo-boat to Italy, where his journey really begins.
He doesn’t actually know how to deal with this new world, but the letter motivates him to reach to the destination with the help of Sophie, an artist he meets near the Swiss border.
