New Yorker Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) gets an ultimatum from his boss and a last chance to come up with a good advertising idea, otherwise he will lose his job.
Harvey goes to London for the weekend, to attend his daughter Susan’s (Liane Balaban) wedding, but
promises his boss he will be back in the office on Monday morning for a very important meeting.
Devastated by the fact that his daughter chose her step father to take her to the altar, Harvey leaves the wedding immediately after the religious ceremony, but he misses his plane and his boss fires him over the phone.
Drinking himself out of his pain in the airport bar, Harvey meets Kate (Emma Thompson), a 40-something employee of the National Statistics Office, whose life is nothing but work, the endless nagging of her mother and occasional humiliating blind dates.
Harvey and Kate hit it off instantly and their ever growing connection will change their lives forever.
