Bo Groden is 11 years old and he lives with her eccentric family in a small town situated in New Mexico.
Her father, Charley, has sunk into a state of depression due to causes nobody seems to be able to understand, and her mother, Arlene, is the only one who has to take care of the entire household.In order to survive and provide for her family, Arlene used to cultivate a lot of vegetables in the back yard.
In the meanwhile, Bo spends her time sending letters to companies which produce sweets, telling them that their products are not according to standards, and she receives, in return for her silence, a box of candies from each one of them.
