All is fair in love and war….that could easily be a second title for this film.

Becky Sharp is the orphan daughter of a painter and of a French opera girl; she has lived in an orphanage almost all her life, but she decides to leave and work as a governess.

She is determined, bright, pretty, she speaks fluent French and she has all the characteristics of a social climber.

Contemporary high society members will do almost anything to stop her. The film shows us 20 years of her life; her marriage, her birth, her loyalties, all the hardships.
